The Narrow Path | Part 4 | But I Say Unto You
In today’s passage, Jesus both gives the strongest possible confirmation that the law of Torah, and also says that there are sure limitations to it and we need to look beneath the surface of the law as we seek to live a life that glorifies God.
After this introduction, Jesus goes through several hot topics in the law – real life stuff like anger, lust, divorce, speaking truth and relating to people that are against you – and hits the deeper layers of the heart where the real battle is fought. He shows, the real battle is not in the outward behaviour; but in the state of your heart and your inward attitude to the outside world. It is our hearts that Jesus came to fight for, redeem and re-orient, so that from a healthy heart we could begin to live life God’s way.
We are going to dive in and discuss each of these topics briefly. But beware, it is not for the faint of heart. Jesus has a radical vision for holiness, and invites us to make some radical decisions from a radically changed heart to live a radically different life.
